Wednesday 28th Sept.2011 – Swim, relax, walk ***** sunny and hot
Top night in our lay-by near the bridge at Cantobre, a village on the rocks. Lay in until 9.30 to give the sun a chance to get round to a spot on the river we have chosen. We pack breakfast and set off across the bridge and down to the secluded pool where the water is deep enough to swim and there is a flat rock to sit on. Exercises first followed by croissants then Mag is brave enough to give the water a try and was straight in without letting on just how cold it was!!! Now it’s my turn, kit off, camera on tripod, timer on and I have ten seconds to make up my mind. With Mag watching and counting down there is no turning back and I launch myself into 6’ of icy water and thought my heart was going to stop! I sadly made a quick exit to sit on the side to wash my hair! Mag stayed in for well over half an hour swimming lengths of the pool and having fun in the flow. She was made to pay for all this fun and had to sit for an hour in 25 degrees of sunshine with two sweatshirts on to warm up and stop shaking! We spent the rest of the day, until 4.30 just enjoying the wonderful scenery, watching the many crayfish wander about seeing each other off, minnows nibbling our toes, loads of water boatmen floating past and we even had two herons circling above and two red squirrels in a tree nearby:) At 5.30 as the sun was dropping behind the gorge and the temperature was dropping too we set off up the road for a walk to the mill we had seen on our way in. At the mill, used to make electricity, we found yet another walnut tree and filled a large bag which should last us a while. We found a narrow footpath winding up to the village of Cantobre, not only is it built up on the rocks at the side of the gorge but also has large columns of rock surrounding it too. We climbed up to explore the narrow streets, church and fantastic views :) Back to the van for pasta and meatballs and our second night here:) As we hadn’t driven the van for a day the batteries were low so we turned everything off and crossed our fingers she starts tomorrow!!!
